My Investment Portfolio (Feb 2008)

Not much changes in my portfolio for this month. I have accepted the delisting offer from Vantage and also CapitaLand's offer for Ascott Group after they managed to acquire more than 90% of the shares. Frontline has also been slated for delisting after shareholders approved the court order to delist the company.

Companies have finally concluded their round of result reporting for those having financial year ending December 2007. I will be waiting for their annual reports patiently to do my analysis.

Looking ahead, the market is still expected to be volatile. Therefore, I will still continue to adopt the strategy to buy on dips.

30 holdings? Gee, isn't that too many stocks to focus on? Do you do your monthly homework on each and everyone?

Hi faith-to-believe,

The 30 stocks that I displayed are my top holdings. In fact, I hold more than 400 stocks currently in my portfolio.

There is no need to monitor or focus my attention on any stock since my portfolio is well diversified.

Hi Mr Chua,
I see you have gone thru the entire phase of ILP to unit trust to direct equity stake since 2001.

May I know what is your experience after this. Is there a place for unit trust in your portfolio since you mentioned you hold 400 stocks and I guess that is as good as indexing the whole market.

Has the return been outpacing UT? I'm thinking of doing the same..

Hi wealth journey,

I am still holding unit trusts in my portfolio, as you can see from the links to my Fundsupermart portfolio display. They are invested only using CPF funds, due to CPF Board regulation with respect to only 35% of CPF-OA and 0% of CPF-SA can be invested in stocks.

So, yes, there is a place for unit trusts in my portfolio.

As to whether my stock portfolio outpeformed UTs, I don't have the official data to back up my claim since I don't compute my portfolio returns. But based on what I observed on those CDP statements sent to me every month, I can see that it had been growing at quite a reasonable value throughout the years. Dividends had also been re-invested back to the portfolio.

In conclusion, I am happy with my portfolio. Also, the journey is not only about returns, but the process as well. What I have learnt throughout the journey is more "profitable" than the actual return numbers. And I can use this experience to continue my investment journey, with more confidence and experienced as time goes by. And hopefully, that will translate into better returns for my portfolio as well.

Thanks Mr Chua for your views.
Definitely, experience gained from going thru the investment process is invaluable down the years.

I'm glad I did not start too late in the journey (only 30+ but would have started earlier if I had discovered the joy of investing earlier! :) )..

Maybe I will start an investment portfolio of stocks based on low PTB ratios.
